Feb 12, 2025, 11:33 AM
In 2024, the COE team participated in 47 community events, connecting nearly 2,700 people with cancer prevention education, screenings, and resources.

In 2024, the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach & Engagement (COE) strengthened its commitment to cancer prevention and education by participating in 47 community events, reaching 2,691 community members with cancer prevention education.

These efforts focused on lung, prostate, breast, colorectal, and HPV-associated cancers, along with risk reduction, survivorship, and other cancer-related topics. By partnering with local organizations, COE helped connect individuals with essential resources, screenings, and support services.

Strengthening Community Partnerships

A highlight of the year was the first annual Healthy Together: Cancer Community Stakeholder Retreat, bringing together community members and organizations to enhance collaboration and strengthen cancer prevention efforts.

Cancer Screenings & Prevention Impact

  • 110 lung cancer pre-screenings were conducted, leading to 60 referrals to UCH’s Smoking Cessation Program.
  • 80 prostate cancer screenings were provided at outreach events in collaboration with UCH clinical teams.

Volunteer & Faculty Engagement

  • 48 student volunteers completed COE’s Outreach Training Program, with 28 attending events to support education efforts.
  • Community Liaisons participated in 27 events, providing outreach and advocacy since the program launched in June 2024.
  • Cancer Center faculty attended seven outreach events, engaging directly with the community and providing expert education.

Collaborating to Reduce Cancer Disparities

COE’s work is supported by local and national partners, expanding access to cancer prevention resources. Educational materials were distributed from organizations including:

  • American Cancer Society
  • Cancer Justice Network
  • Cancer Support Community
  • City of Cincinnati Health Department
  • WE4H

Additionally, partner organizations joined outreach events to engage directly with the community, including:

  • Cancer Family Care
  • The Center for Closing the Health Gap
  • Council on Aging
  • Hamilton County’s 513 Relief Bus
  • Pink Ribbon Good
  • Urban League

Through these collaborations, COE continues to expand cancer prevention education, screening access, and community engagement efforts to reduce cancer disparities and improve health outcomes.
