Acclimatization to environmental change via epigenomic and genomic mechanisms in humans and non-human primates

Presenter: Kathleen Grogan, PhD, Assistant Professor, University of Cincinnati

Dr. Katie Grogan did her Ph.D. at Duke University followed by two 3 year postdoctoral fellowships, one at Emory University and one at Pennsylvania State University. She started as an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Anthropology and Biology at UC in Fall 2020. In the her lab, she investigates the impact of genetic and epigenetic variation on differences in fitness across environmental conditions. By using human and non-human primate models, her work has direct applications to both human health research and conservation work. Furthermore, because she investigates questions relating to human variation and evolution as well as endangered species conservation and she works with and near marginalized peoples in areas of the world with long histories of colonial oppression, her work incorporates the consideration of ethical implications of the work and involves the participant communities in the work throughout the research process, from study design through publication. Dr. Grogan is currently developing projects to examine how long-term environmental change has affected human hunter-gatherers in Southwest Uganda and how short-term environmental variation affects wild thick-tailed galagos in South Africa.
