Critical Care Medicine Training Track (CCMT)

The Critical Care Medicine Training Track (CCMT) program is designed for applicants who know early that their career will include the practice of critical care medicine. CCMT combines our four-year categorical Anesthesiology Residency with a one-year Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) Fellowship into a single, integrated five-year program, with early exposure to the ICU and dedicated critical care mentorship from the start of training. At completion, CCMT graduates are eligible for American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) Diplomate status in both Anesthesiology and Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine. The University of Cincinnati is one of only a handful of programs nationally to offer this type of integrated pathway. One categorical residency position each year is open to CCMT applicants. The first three years of training parallel our core anesthesiology residency. The final two years integrate fellow-level critical care medicine, complex-case anesthesiology, and electives pertinent to the modern intensivist, including multiple months rotating through the critical care units at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Why CCMT

  • A guaranteed ACCM fellowship position at the University of Cincinnati.
  • Integration into the Critical Care Anesthesia Team (CCAT) throughout all of residency.
  • Increased critical care mentorship, including a dedicated critical care faculty mentor.
  • Focused rotations in the CA-3 (PGY-4) and PGY-5 years designed to prepare trainees for a career as a modern, capable intensivist.

Built Into Your Training:

CCMT residents are part of the critical care division from day one, with invitations throughout residency and fellowship to:

  • ICU fellow lectures
  • CCAT journal clubs
  • CCAT case review and M&M conferences
  • ECLS quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) meetings
  • ICU point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) sessions
  • Regular meetings with ICU program leadership
  • Society meetings, including SCCM and SOCCA, with opportunities to present cases
  • CU team outings and social events
