Research Projects

Dr. Shah's research focuses on the intersection of women's health, cardiovascular health, and kidney disease. Details for all current research projects are listed below.

Sex Differences in Cardiovascular Health in Kidney Disease

This project investigates how biological sex influences cardiovascular risk, presentation, and outcomes in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It examines differences in diagnosis, treatment, and survival between males and females. The goal is to identify sex-specific risk markers and therapeutic approaches. Findings aim to inform more personalized cardiovascular care in CKD patients.

Pregnancy in Patients with Kidney Disease

This study explores maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnancies affected by CKD across all stages. It evaluates risk factors, disease progression, and optimal management strategies during gestation. Special focus is given to preeclampsia, preterm births, and kidney function. The goal is to guide evidence-based counseling and multidisciplinary care.

Pregnancy in Kidney Transplant Recipients

This research assesses pregnancy outcomes in women and a kidney transplant, focusing on graft function, immunosuppression, and maternal-fetal health. It examines timing of conception, medication safety, and rejection risk. The study seeks to optimize care pathways and minimize complications. Long-term impacts on both maternal and graft health are evaluated.

Machine Learning Model to Determine Revascularization Strategy in Patients with Kidney Disease

This project develops and validates a machine learning model to assist in clinical decision-making for revascularization (PCI vs. CABG) in patients with kidney failure and coronary artery disease. It integrates demographic, clinical, imaging, and procedural data to predict outcomes. The model aims to support individualized treatment planning and reduce complications. Clinical utility and generalizability are assessed using multi-institutional datasets.

Reproductive Health in Patients with Kidney Disease

This study addresses fertility, contraception, and family planning in females with CKD. It explores the impact of kidney disease on reproductive function and outcomes. Barriers to counseling and care access are examined. The goal is to develop comprehensive reproductive health guidelines for this population.

Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy and Cardiovascular Disease
This research investigates the link between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (e.g. preeclampsia) and long-term cardiovascular risk. It focuses on women with and without CKD to understand additive risks. The study aims to identify early markers of cardiovascular risk in females with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Findings will inform post pregnancy cardiovascular surveillance strategies.
