Cincinnati’s Med-Peds residency program had a strong tradition of training graduates to succeed in careers related to primary care, hospital medicine, and many subspecialties. We offer three optional residency pathway experiences, the Acute Care Pathway, the Primary Care Pathway, and the LGBTQ+ Pathway. Members of the pathways are still required to meet all the ACGME program requirements for training in Med-Peds but have the opportunity to participate in additional experiences tailored to their future career. All pathways offer specialized educational sessions that all residents (whether part of the pathway or not!) can attend. Some examples of past events include how to find a job as a hospitalist, basics of bedside ultrasound, basics of palliative care in the inpatient setting, primary care networking, continuous glucose monitor education, and journal clubs.
Recent surveys have shown that roughly one quarter of Med-Peds residency graduates pursue careers in Hospital Medicine or acute care related subspecialties (e.g. critical care, infectious disease, cardiology, etc.). The skills that are needed for a physician to adequately meet the needs of hospitalized patients and serve the health care system are constantly changing. The goal of the Acute Care Pathway is to meet the evolving needs of those who wish to pursue careers caring for hospitalized patients.
Our Acute Care Pathway is led by Dr. Abbie Goodman, one of our core faculty members and a fantastic Med-Peds hospitalist! Goals of the pathway include:
We are thrilled to offer a primary care pathway as part of our Med-Peds resident experience. Any resident, regardless of intent to enter primary care as a career, is welcome to participate! We have 8 clinic-based faculty involved in the pathway and residents also have access to our numerous community-based Med-Peds physicians. The goal of the Primary Care Pathway is to deepen and expand residents' skills and knowledge for primary care practice.
This pathway is managed by our APD, Dr. Leslie Applegate. Goals of the pathway include:
We have recently launched an LGBTQ Health Pathway for residents interested in improving the quality of care they provide to LGBTQ across specialties and disciplines. Run by Dr. Abby Nye (core faculty) and Dr. Nicole Damari (APD), this project welcome participants from both the Med-Peds and Internal Medicine residency programs.
Clinical – Pathway participants have engaged in a number of projects to ensure that robust, comprehensive clinical care is being provided to our LGBTQ patients in all settings. This has included projects focused on improved sexual health counseling, PrEP prescribing, among others.
Educational Workshops – Resident- and faculty-led didactics and workshops focus on LGBTQ disparities, social determinants of health, and unique clinical needs of diverse members of the LGTBQ community.
Scholarship – Residents in the pathway are supported in identifying a scholarly area of interest within LGBTQ health and executing a scholarly project, which can be focused on education, quality improvement, clinical research, and beyond.
