Scholarly activity is a key component of our residency training program. As part of a large academic health center, many basic and translational research opportunities are available for our residents. Over the course of training, each of our residents will complete two Quality Improvement projects, one research project, and at least one additional scholarly activity (case report, regional presentation, etc). The Department hosts an annual Quality Improvement and Research Symposium each Spring in which residents present their QI projects.
Research can be conducted during the elective time or concurrently with other rotations. Many of our residents also choose to participate in leadership opportunities within our institution and pathology societies.
Residents who are presenting posters or oral presentations at a professional meeting can apply for a Travel Grant to support expenses for the meeting. A Departmental Travel Grant supports up to $2500 in professional expenses related to attending a meeting. This is in addition to the scholarly Travel Allowance provided by the GME.
Funds of up to $10,000 are available to support the investigative activities of trainees. Residents and fellows are encouraged to submit grant applications along with a faculty mentor as Primary Investigator. There are 3 deadlines for acceptance of applications annually.
