What is the duration of fellowship program?
Our traditional fellowship is 2 years in duration. An optional 3rd year of training, can be arranged depending upon the available funding resources on a case-by-case basis. The IMSTAR program within the Department of Internal Medicine additionally provides an opportunity for selected trainees to pursue specific training in basic, translational, clinical or educational research. How many fellowship positions are available?
Our program has a total of 6 fellows in the program with 3 fellow positions per academic year.
What is the typical rotation schedule?
Fellows are on UCMC consult service for an average of 3 months per year. They are assigned to VAMC ambulatory rotation, West Chester Hospital and Research/Diabetes Now rotation for 2-3 months each year in addition to one month of vacation/educational leave.
How are applicants selected for interviews?
We review applications through ERAS from the time the season is opened to programs until early August. Our key teaching faculty members review the applications. The selected candidates are emailed through Thalamus to schedule virtual interviews. Interviews are held from late August through mid-October.
What is a typical interview day like?
Interviews occur on Thursdays from 1-4 pm EST. Candidates will be given an introduction and overview of the program by the Program Director, followed by 3 personal interviews with our faculty members as well as a separate session with current fellows. The day ends at 4 pm with concluding remarks from the Program Director, Program Coordinator and interviewing faculty.
Are there opportunities for fellows to teach?
Yes, our fellows teach medical students, rotating residents and the junior fellows. Our fellows give endocrine grand rounds to our division in addition to regularly presenting journal club and clinical case conferences. The educational presentations by the fellows are formally evaluated and specific feedback is provided to them to further enhance their teaching and presentation skills.
Are there opportunities for fellows to perform procedures?
Fellows have extensive hands-on procedural experience throughout their training. They participate in dedicated Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) clinics at both the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and the Cincinnati VA Medical Center. They also receive structured instruction and supervised practice in endocrine neck ultrasound from ECNU-certified faculty. In addition, several clinics with various faculty provide hands-on experience with diabetes technology such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring devices. Fellows also receive training in the interpretation of DXA scans. Fellows additionally participate in therapeutic administration of Radioactive Iodine-131 in the treatment of thyroid diseases.
What EMR is used?
The EMR used at UC Health is EPIC. The EMR used at the VAMC is CPRS.
How is the call covered?
Fellows are on the UCMC consult service for 4 weeks at a time. The UCMC consult fellow takes after-hours call for 3 nights per week. Fellows take weekend consult calls on a rotating basis. On average, each fellow covers 1 out of every 4-5 weekends.
What are the research expectations from the fellows and what resources are available for fellows in this regard?
Our fellows participate in various research and scholarly activities under the guidance and supervision of faculty members during their training. Fellows are expected to submit a manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal and present at a national professional society meeting at least once during their fellowship. Fellows are also expected to participate in a clinical or educational quality improvement project. Fellows receive an annual Professional Development Account (PDA) allowance for education-related expenses and to support their travel to professional meetings as approved by the GME office policies and the training program.
What about the cost of living in the Cincinnati area?
Average housing/renting/living costs in the Cincinnati area are noted by many professional sites to be well below the US average.
