Do you have a passion for the science of learning? The Medical Education Pathway teaches foundational medical education principles and and connects you with a community of practice of innovative educators.

The pathway consists of the following elements:

Didactics

The Medical Education Pathway hosts regular noon conferences throughout the year, covering standard medical education themes (assessment, feedback, testing, adult learning theory, presentations, teaching, etc.), but also modern theories and debates (competency based time-variable education, bias mitigation, pass/fail grading, etc.). In addition, education faculty and residents will present their medical education research for review and discussion.

Electives

Participants in the Medical Education Pathway have priority access to two electives:

1. Teaching Elective: a 2-week rotation where you teach in varied settings (academic half day, clinical skills simulation lab, in the clinic, on the wards) and expert educators give you one on one feedback about your performance. The pathway directors will also provide feedback to you on your teaching in multiple venues using a standard feedback form.
2. Theory Elective: a 2 week rotation covering nearly all modern medical education theories. These include:
• Learners’ engagement in information processing
• Knowledge construction and schemas
• Cognitive load theory
• Cognitive theory of multimedia learning
• Constructivism (psychological or cognitive)
• Experiential learning
• Reflection
• Adult learning principles
• Self-directed learning
• Communities of practice and situated learning
• Cognitive apprenticeships
• Growth mindset
• Master adaptive learning
• Coaching
• Programmatic assessment
• Competency based medical education

Scholarly Projects

Pathway residents work with education faculty to create scholarly projects of many types, including curriculum development, assessment tools, and cutting edge research.

Mentorship

Education faculty mentor and sponsor pathway residents to assist them into becoming professional medical educators.
