Research Awards

The Department of Neurosurgery offers several awards for outstanding research performed by a resident. Awardees are determined by neurosurgery faculty and awards are announced and presented at the annual graduation ceremony.

Ellen and Stewart Dunsker Award for Clinical Research; $2000

Clinical research is defined as direct application of investigative studies (e.g. clinical trials, clinical observations, chart and literature reviews) for improvement, understanding and/or management of patient care, including the introduction of new innovative surgical techniques and technology. The clinical studies may be prospective or retrospective. Case studies fall within the scope of this award, especially if they are “ground breaking”.

A significant portion of the work should be performed at the University of Cincinnati.  We encourage submission of a paper recently published in a peer reviewed journal. That said, if not yet published, presentation of the results at a national meeting and/or publication of an abstract or poster presentation will also be favorably considered.

Basic science manuscripts will not be considered for this particular award. However, translational research studies that apply the results of basic studies to patient care are acceptable. In other words, clinical application is an essential requirement for the Dunsker Award.

John M. Tew Award in Surgical Neuro-Oncology; $2000

The focus of the work should be on brain tumors (primary or metastatic) and could consist of either basic science or clinical research.  Basic science research with potential translation to clinical trials will be given special consideration. Clinical research could be either prospective or retrospective studies.  Case reports will not be considered.

A significant portion of the work should be performed at the University of Cincinnati.  We encourage submission of a paper recently submitted or published in a peer-reviewed journal.  If not yet published, presentation of the results at a national meeting and/or publication of an abstract or poster presentation will also be favorably considered.

Gabriella and Mario Zuccarello Award for Cerebrovascular Research; $2000

Cerebrovascular research may include basic science research, translational research, and direct application of investigative studies (e.g. clinical trials, clinical observations, chart and literature reviews) for improvement, and understanding and/or management of patient care, including the introduction of new innovative surgical techniques and technology. The clinical studies may be prospective or retrospective. Case studies fall within the scope of this award, especially if they are “ground breaking”.

Department of Neurosurgery Award; $2000

Cerebrovascular research may include basic science research, translational research, and direct application of investigative studies (e.g. The Department of Neurosurgery Award is given for work focused on any other neurological system other than brain tumors, spinal tumors, skull base cerebrovascular and spine. In order to be considered the clinical or basic science research must have been an accepted or published manuscript in a peer reviewed journal or an accepted or already presented abstract at a national meeting.
