The Department of Neurosurgery has a number of research opportunities for trainees interested in the field. See the list below for descriptions of the currently available programs.

Eligibility: All undergraduate students who can illustrate interest in neurotrauma research are eligible to apply.

Application materials include current resume/CV (including GPA) and 1 page, single spaced personal statement explaining the candidates interest in neurotrauma and how the position relates to future career goals. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview with Dr. Laura Ngwenya.

Position Type: The selected Fellow will be expected to work 30 - 40 hours a week for 8 - 10 weeks in a laboratory setting. The Fellow will receive a stipend.
Description: The Translational Neurotrauma Laboratory in the UC Department of Neurosurgery is offers an Undergraduate Neurotrauma Summer Research Fellowship. The Fellow will work in Dr. Laura Ngwenya's lab conducting experiments using a rodent model of traumatic brain injury. Successful candidates will demonstrate an excellent academic record, are self-motivated and well organized, and have an interest in neurosurgery and neurotrauma.

Note: Neurosurgery participation in the Neuroscience MSSP Program will be limited to the Endovascular Division. Students interested in working with other Divisions in the Department are encouraged to apply to the Neurosurgery MSSRP which includes the option to work with any Division.

Description:
The Cincinnati Neurosurgery Gap Year Scholars Program is a year-long opportunity for two medical students who are committed to a career in neurosurgery and are seeking additional support and experience before applying for residency.
The program is specifically designed for students from DO and MD programs that do not have a home neurosurgery residency, and takes place between the OMS3/M3 and OMS4/M4 years.
Through a combination of research, clinical exposure, and mentorship, the program helps students strengthen their residency applications while gaining meaningful experience in academic neurosurgery.
The Cincinnati Neurosurgery Gap Year Scholars Program is a joint effort between the Departments of Neurosurgery at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati.

Description: The UC Department of Neurosurgery M3 Research Fellowship is intended for medical students finishing their 3rd year of medical school and intending to apply for neurosurgery residency. Selected fellows will participate in research projects and neurosurgery educational activities to expand their knowledge of neurosurgery and to make them more competitive when applying to Neurosurgery residency programs.
In this position, participants will have the opportunity to be a part of a variety of research projects in the Department. These projects span database and retrospective studies, clinical trials, data science studies, and basic science laboratory work. Projects may be within any of the subspecialties within neurosurgery. The Fellow will be expected to participate in multiple publications and present their research at local, regional, and national meetings.
The Scholar will be responsible for maintaining excellent departmental research citizenship by actively participating in Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs, Research Division Meetings, local and national meetings, among other activities.
The ideal candidate is committed to Neurosurgery as a career, dedicated to a full year of research, highly self-motivated, able to work under conditions of varying supervision, flexible, and have an exemplary academic record.
