Cytopathology Rotation

Man with testtubesLength: 4 x 4 week-long blocks

Location: University of Cincinnati Medical Center

Rotation Director: Rachel Jug, MD

Participating Faculty: Douglas Johnson, M.D.; Paul Lee, M.D., Ph.D.; Jiang Wang, M.D., Ph.D.

On cytopathology service, residents are exposed to a high volume of cytology cases (Annual volumes: GYN - 13,000, non-GYN - 5,500, FNA - 1,800), including both routine cases, such as Pap smears and fine needle aspirates of thyroid nodules, to challenging case, such as core biopsies of lung and pancreas masses.  During this rotation, residents develop diagnostic skills necessary for them to sign out cytopathology cases throughout their career, no matter the practice setting. Residents participate in rapid on-site evaluations during FNA procedures, review cases and general principles with cytotechnologists, and preview slides and sign out cases with the faculty. While on cytopathology rotations, residents have the unique opportunities to independently conduct rapid on-site evaluations during FNAs, and to participate in QI and research projects.
