Program Mission Statement

The Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship trains exemplary physicians to care for patients and families with serious illnesses.

Program Structure

7 months inpatient consultation at WCH, 2 weeks inpatient at CCHMC, 10 weeks of Hospice of Cincinnati, 8 weeks of elective

Our program aspires to be the regional leader in training physicians in the practice of hospice and palliative medicine. The fellows will be recruited locally, though applicants will apply from a national pool. The program serves a wide variety of patients in the inpatient hospital setting, home hospice care, inpatient hospice unit care, and nursing facilities. Graduates will work both locally, in academic roles, and nationally, as community-based palliative care providers.

The goals of the program include

1. Describe and apply strategies for alleviation of physical and psychological distress in patients and families coping with serious illness
   
2. Apply communication skills to break bad news, to establish goals of care with patients and families, and to address conflict in patient, family, and team interactions
3. Work in interdisciplinary teams
4. Work in a variety of community-based systems including hospice, nursing facilities, and outpatient palliative care
5. Care for the imminently dying patient
6. Teach the principles of palliative care, including quality improvement and evidence-based practice.
