Our Medicine-Pediatrics program welcomed its first class in 1990. The class expanded to its current size of seven residents per year in 1994. In February of 1995, we added our combined resident-faculty med-peds clinic.
We have many things to thank for our success, but most important is the strength and commitment of our parent departments. The departments of internal medicine and pediatrics are equally dedicated to excellence in training, and are exceptionally well matched in rigor, size, research dollars, and, most
importantly, in quality of residency training.
The mission of our program, which was founded over 30 years, is to train a group of humanistic, adaptive, skilled, well-rounded physicians that providecare across the lifespan of our patients. Our program's mission is supported by the following aims, which we strive to achieve in all of our curricular and programming initiatives:
Excellent clinical training - Our program strives to provide excellent clinical training in patient-centered, evidence based care.
Advocacy - Our program strives to prepare residents to be advocates for their patients and reduce healthcare disparities.
Strong Med-Peds identity and sense of community - Our program strives to foster a strong Med-Peds identity and sense of community in Cincinnati, including opportunities to pursue careers locally.
Promotion of well-being - Our program strives to develop physicians that are adaptive, resilient, and promote their own personal well-being in any learning environment.
Service - Our program strives to cultivate a community of physicians that is focused on serving others and the community.
Autonomy and leadership - Our program strives to provide our residents with opportunities to have autonomy and leadership in the clinical environment, as well as experiences in patient-centeredness, team-based care, and systems-based practice.
Master adaptive learners - Our program strives to develop master adaptive learners that are expert, self-directed, self-regulated, and lifelong workplace learners.
Preparation for a variety of career paths - Our program strives to prepare our residents to enter a wide variety of career paths after the completion of their residency training.
The UC Department of Internal Medicine expertly cares for the sickest and most complex patients in the greater Cincinnati area. Our residents are fortunate to be able to interact with outstanding educators from every internal medicine subspecialty and care for patients with rare diseases as well as “bread and butter” medical conditions. Among these outstanding divisions is a large division of General Internal Medicine, including our ambulatory faculty, hospitalists, and a number of research faculty. From this division come some of our most gifted clinician educators and mentors, including our Med-Peds faculty. These faculty supervise our residents on our general internal medicine ward services and precept in our Med-Peds clinic, lending their broad, global expertise to our residents' training experience.
Our internal medicine residency program, under the leadership of Dr. Eric Warm, is one of the leading internal medicine training programs in the country and has become internationally known as a leader in internal medicine residency training innovation. The internal medicine program has developed a ground-breaking resident assessment system, a novel knowledge testing program, and the resident long block for ambulatory training which has revolutionized how residents provide care for patients in their continuity clinic. This dedication to education is reflected in the high American Board of Internal Medicine certifying exam pass rates (PDF), which are published for all programs on their website.
Our pediatrics residency at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is recognized as one of the most rigorous and competitive in the country. The program is committed to broad exposure to general and subspecialty pediatrics, opportunities for involvement in research, quality improvement, and community-based initiatives, strong mentorship, and a supportive training environment.
Cincinnati Children's is a world-renowned children’s hospital, so residents receive a remarkable depth and breadth of experience. Since it is the only regional inpatient pediatric facility, the residents also care for children with common, "bread and butter" pediatric conditions. As a testament to the excellence in training, they also enjoy an extremely high board pass rates (PDF) on the American Board of Pediatrics initial certifying exam.
What does all of this mean for our med-peds residents? They have wonderfully balanced training in medicine and pediatrics. Our leadership lives the philosophy of continuous improvement, and is dedicated to quality training for the residents.
Our parent departments strongly support the med-peds residency. We have a strong med-peds faculty group, who work closely with our residents, as mentors, colleagues, and research advisors.
Many years ago, there was a trend across the country to increase the size of successful med-peds programs. At that time, we made a conscious decision to be the best program we could be, not the biggest. At seven residents per year, we are large enough to have our own identity, but do not overwhelm either categorical residency. Our goal is seamless integration, and quality of training, not quantity!

Our residents are fortunate to participate in the innovative educational experiences offered by our core pediatric and internal medicine residency training programs. In addition to well-appointed clinical services that provide an optimal balance of patient care exposure, supervision, rigor and teaching, our residents are also able to receive hands-on experience in quality improvement, state-of-the-art simulation experiences, and patient/family centered care.
We like to call our Med-Peds clinic the “crown jewel” of our residency training program! Our combined resident-faculty Med-Peds clinic inspires residents from day one to “become” the doctor for their panel of patients. Residents and faculty practice side-by-side which allows for optimal mentorship as our residents gain skills to become excellent primary care physicians.
Since residency training has advanced over the past 20 years, and career options have become endless following residency, we recognize a need to individualize the training experience for each resident. In 2017, we launched our acute care and primary care tracks to help provide a more individualized mentorship and clinical experience for residents interested in careers as hospitalists or hospital-based subspecialties (via the acute care track), or as primary care physicians (via the primary care track).
Our residents are fortunate that they are able to practice in two quaternary-care hospitals where they get to see patients with rare diseases and work alongside the subspecialists that care for them. However, they also get an immense amount of exposure to “bread-and-butter” pediatrics and internal medicine via general inpatient services and ambulatory experiences. As a result, at the conclusion of their residency our residents are competent and confident to care for any patient or diagnosis that may come their way in their future career!
We believe that building a strong social support network for our residents allows them to thrive during their time as a resident. We have built a supportive and family-like atmosphere through initiatives such as allowing our residents to rotate through pediatrics and internal medicine together, social activities for residents and faculty that are open to family members, a mentor-advisor program between residents and Med-Peds faculty, an open-door policy for feedback and improvement, and the presence of a fifth-year Med-Peds Chief resident with the sole function of supporting our residents.
