Welcome

Dear Colleagues and Students,

At the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, our mission is to advance health through innovative research, exceptional education, and outstanding patient care. As a leading institution, we bear the significant responsibility of training the next generation of physicians with the utmost dedication to quality, safety, excellence and integrity.

A pivotal aspect of upholding this commitment is our participation in the rigorous accreditation process conducted by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). This process, which occurs every eight years, serves as a comprehensive review to ensure our programs meet the highest standards required for medical education in the United States. We are proud to have received full accreditation during our last site visit in October 2019, and we are diligently preparing for our next self-study and site visit.

Accreditation is more than a formal endorsement; it reflects our dedication to maintaining the highest quality in medical education. It is essential for the licensing of our graduates and their ability to secure positions in competitive residency programs. Beyond meeting these external standards, accreditation provides us with the opportunity to critically evaluate our practices and implement improvements that align with the strategic priorities of our college and university.

Central to this endeavor is our robust Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process and CQI Oversight Committee. By consistently analyzing and enhancing our processes and outcomes, we not only secure successful accreditation outcomes but also foster a culture of continuous innovation and excellence.

I extend my gratitude to each of you for your unwavering dedication to upholding the highest standards of quality in our programs. Together, we will continue to ensure that the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine stands at the forefront of medical education, producing exceptional healthcare professionals ready to make a profound impact on the world.

Gregory C. Postel, MD
Executive Vice President for Health Affairs and Christian R. Holmes Professor and Dean

What is the LCME?

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) is a nationally recognized accrediting authority for medical education programs leading to the M.D. degree in the United States and Canada. LCME accreditation is a voluntary, peer-reviewed process of quality assurance that determines whether a medical education program meets established standards as outlined in the "Functions and Structure of a Medical School." This accreditation is essential in most states for licensing graduates and for receiving federal financial aid. Furthermore, only graduates of LCME-accredited schools are eligible for residency programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Element 1.1 of the LCME requires a medical school to have a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process in place. In response, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (UCCOM) approved a CQI policy through the College of Medicine Council, which led to the creation of a CQI Oversight Committee. This committee ensures that the medical school continuously meets and maintains the standards set by the LCME.
