Critical Care Overview-Bonomo Albertson and Patient

Critical Care

The Division of Critical Care in the UC Department of Emergency Medicine currently houses seven core faculty who are dual trained in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care. It also is the home of the FLEX-ICU, the nation’s first inpatient ICU operated by a Department of Emergency Medicine.  The FLEX-ICU cares for a wide range of patients, provides “just say yes” capacity for regional partners with the ability to immediately accept patients in transfer regardless of type of illness or injury and contains the embedded Donor Care Unit of the Network for Hope where brain dead organ donors are managed prior to organ procurement.

EM-Critical Care faculty currently serve as attending academic faculty in the FLEX-ICU, Neurosciences Critical Care ICU (NSICU), the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) and ECMO team, the Surgical ICU (SICU), the ENT ICU and the Burns-Special Care ICU (BSCU) at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Faculty from the critical care division also provide medical direction for all organ donor management in the region. The division supports the UCMC Neurocritical Care Fellowship, which was the country’s first Neurocritical care fellowship program to train EM physicians in the subspecialty of neurological critical care. Many of the EM-CCM faculty are trained and certified in TEE and support intra-arrest TEE use in the ED and ICU platforms at UCMC.

In addition to the available clinical training for critical care fellows, we have been awarded an NIH-funded T32 fellowship training program for qualified aspiring clinician-scientists. The division of critical care is actively engaged in the programmatic development of advanced critical care delivery in the ED and the role of ECMO-facilitated cardio cerebral resuscitation.

Faculty within the division currently offer elective rotations for EM residents and in 1) Critical Care Ultrasound and point-of-care ECHO, 2) Resuscitation, and 3) ED-Critical Care.

The Division of Critical Care is a stalwart presence in the fabric of critical care delivery at UCMC and continues to grow and develop at a rapid pace.

The future of critical care may well lie within the growth of Emergency Medicine itself, and the UC EM Critical Care division is poised to remain a fundamental contributor to that future for our institution and our specialty.
