About the Residency Program

Welcome to the University of Cincinnati Emergency Medicine Residency Program!

The University of Cincinnati was the first Emergency Medicine residency established in 1970 and has remained at the cutting edge of residency training. Our motto of “Leadership, Excellence & Opportunity” is promoted in all aspects of our training. The residency is a 4-year training program with an emphasis on progressive responsibility and autonomy. Highlights of the program include:

  • Graduated responsibility model across a 4 year curriculum with early exposure to the full breadth of emergency medicine: interns manage a wide spectrum of common ED pathology from day one, second year residents further emphasize procedural excellence, third year residents become expert leaders of resuscitations, and fourth-year residents refine their skills as educators, supervisors, and leaders in the department.
  • Outstanding clinical experience in the state-of-the-art Center for Emergency Care at University of Cincinnati Medical Center: a high volume, urban, quaternary care center with a focus on underserved patient care, and the region’s only Level I trauma center.
  • Integrated pediatric experience throughout all 4 years at both Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the affiliated community hospital Cincinnati Children’s Liberty. CCHMC is routinely ranked by US News/World Report in the top 3 of pediatric hospitals in the country.
  • Two adult community suburban clinical sites, as well as a pediatric suburban clinical site, which complement the experience at UCMC by allowing residents to learn community-based emergency medicine.
  • Commitment to research including resident research grants, strong infrastructure and mentorship through Emergency Medicine Research, Scholarship and Innovation (EM-RSI), research associates for assistance with data collection and the possibility of completing the Resident Research Track for residents with an interest in a research career.
  • Opportunities for mentorship and career development spanning mentor pairings with attendings and optional engagement in specialized leadership academies. Our attendings have expertise across the field of Emergency Medicine including cardiovascular emergencies, critical care, medical education, emergency medical services, neurological emergencies, operations, quality improvement, simulation, basic science and clinical research, social emergency medicine and advocacy, toxicology, ultrasound, wilderness medicine, and more.
  • Electives starting in second year and increasing in third and fourth year, allowing individualized career and clinical development. These electives are resident-driven and structured around each individual resident’s career aspirations.
  • Air Care aeromedical experience beginning in the first year of residency with a resident/nurse flight team, operating out of three bases and averaging 1300 flights/year.
  • Strong EMS curriculum with integrated ground, aeromedical, and telemetry training for all residents. Many residents additionally elect to serve as Assistant Medical Directors for squads throughout the city. Further opportunities in tactical medicine/SWAT, urban search and rescue, mass gathering medicine, and disaster training are also available. Among the first ACGME-accredited EMS fellowships.
  • Emphasis on team atmosphere with strong ancillary services including, Emergency Medicine clinical pharmacists, social work, case management, substance-use counseling and addiction services connections, as well as psychiatric services.
  • Strong resident-driven Grand Rounds including Morbidity and Mortality Conference, evidence-based medicine lectures, core content reviews, Clinical Pathologic Cases, simulation-based learning, small group workshops, Journal Club and case follow-ups. Due to emphasis on teaching, public speaking, and presentation skills, every resident lectures at Grand Rounds each year.
  • We recruit residents from a national pool of top medical school applicants. Our graduates hold leadership positions across the country and sometimes obtain leadership positions directly out of training, thus allowing us to maintain a strong national reputation.

We hope this website gives you a taste of the wide variety of opportunities offered to our Emergency Medicine residents. Please feel free to contact us for further information.
