Applied Global Health Program

The Applied Global Health Program provides DEPHS and MPH graduate students with opportunities to apply classroom learning to real-world public health and community-based work. This collaboration between the UC Department of Environmental & Public Health Sciences (DEPHS) and SOTENI International connects students with opportunities to gain hands-on experience, professional mentorship, and practical skills in global and community health.

SOTENI International is a nonprofit organization that has worked alongside communities in rural Kenya for more than 20 years. Through locally led programs in health, economic empowerment, and community development, SOTENI partners with communities to identify priorities and develop practical, sustainable solutions that improve health and livelihoods.

Depending on their interests, skills, and professional goals, students may contribute to projects involving:

  • Research and data
  • Program development and evaluation
  • Grant research and writing
  • Community engagement
  • Volunteer and community-based activities

Through SOTENI's work in the United States and Kenya, students can gain experience with community-based and global public health practice while developing skills that complement their academic training and career goals.

Opportunities are tailored to students' interests and skills, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis based on available opportunities.
